About the Bagpipe Tuner
This app is a tuner for the Great Highland Bagpipes (pipes). It works like a classical tuner but is specifically designed for bagpipes.
Bagpipes are not tuned in equal temperament like a piano; instead, they use just or adjusted intervals. Therefore, it is very helpful to use a tuner developed especially for this instrument — tuning becomes much easier.
A particular challenge is the very high and rather sharp sound of the chanter, rich in overtones. This makes identifying the fundamental note difficult, especially for a smartphone microphone.
Historical measurements from 1885 showed a pitch of 441 Hz for the chanter’s base note. By the mid-1950s, the average value was around 459 Hz. Today we are already reaching 480 Hz and above.
The tuner app automatically detects the notes being played and shows how far they deviate from the target value.
The app works entirely offline and collects no data. It is fully open-source and may be freely shared.
